Rising demand in the specialty transformer market: an analysis of application scenarios for phase-shifting rectifiers, electric furnaces, and grounding transformers.
In addition to conventional distribution transformers, various types of special-purpose transformers are extensively used in industries such as manufacturing, metallurgy and mining, and chemical processing. These specialized transformers require custom design to meet specific operating conditions and differ significantly from standard distribution transformers in terms of technology; improper selection can directly prevent production equipment from operating reliably.
Phase-shifting rectifier transformers primarily serve medium- and high-voltage inverters. By employing edge‑delta phase shifting, they achieve multi-pulse rectification, reducing harmonic distortion on the utility side. They are widely used in metallurgy, water treatment plants, mining operations, and offshore platforms. The secondary windings can be configured with 9, 12, 18, or 24 phases, featuring Class H insulation and a high‑impedance design that suppresses surge currents from the inverter and minimizes harmonic pollution of the power grid; in some applications, this eliminates the need for additional filtering equipment.
Electric furnace transformers serve resistance furnaces, salt-bath furnaces, and non-ferrous metal melting electric furnaces, requiring low-voltage, high-current output with wide-range voltage adjustability. Small-capacity electric furnace transformers are typically dry-type, while large-capacity units employ forced-oil circulation and water cooling; they are the core power transformation equipment in metallurgical heat-treatment production lines.
Z-type grounded transformers (grounding transformers) are used in systems with ungrounded neutral points. They provide a neutral point and can be connected to arc-suppression coils to mitigate single-phase ground faults, while also serving as station service transformers to reduce project costs. SVG matching connection transformers are specifically designed for static var generators and have stringent, specialized requirements for harmonic tolerance and impedance parameters; they are critical equipment in power quality improvement projects. Additionally, CSD marine transformers are engineered to withstand the harsh conditions of ships—such as rolling, salt spray, humidity, and vibration—and comply with industry-specific standards.
Specialty transformers are not fully standardized; almost all require customized design and calculations based on the customer’s load profile and grid conditions. Early-stage electrical‑scheme coordination is especially critical, requiring complete information on load characteristics, harmonic content, and environmental conditions to be provided to the manufacturer. Shenyang Guangchangyun Power Equipment possesses in‑house capabilities for the custom R&D and production of specialty transformers. Phase‑shifting rectifiers, electric‑furnace transformers, grounding transformers, and SVG‑compatible transformers can all be designed and manufactured to specification, offering tailored substation solutions to industrial, metallurgical, and chemical enterprises.
